The Derryfield School Lyceum Gallery is delighted to present “ENGRAINED,” a compelling art exhibition showcasing the distinct works of two accomplished artists, Daniela Wenzel and Trevor Toney. The exhibition will run from November 28, 2023 to January 17, 2024, offering art enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of geometric and biomorphic abstraction, narrative painting, and the exquisite craftsmanship of woodwork.
Daniela Wenzel, a seasoned multi-disciplinary artist, has dedicated the past 20 years to the exploration of geometric and biomorphic abstraction. Her diverse output, spanning painting, fiber, and wood, is a testament to her commitment to non-representational interpretations of the world. Wenzel’s fascination with colors, patterns, and effects drives her imaginative process, where play is the driving force behind her creations.
Trevor Toney, an artist with a profound appreciation for the intrinsic qualities of wood, constructs his objects with Baltic birch plywood, enhancing them with veneers that become a canvas for his artistic expression. Toney’s pieces are a collaboration between the natural characteristics of the wood and his deliberate artistic choices. His meticulous craftsmanship, technical prowess, and keen eye for detail result in canvases that directly correlate with the geometric subjects he paints on them, exploring visual perspective, balance, and the interplay of form.
Wenzel and Toney’s works share an intriguing dialogue within the “ENGRAINED” exhibition. Wenzel’s abstract narratives and dynamic pattern work converse with Toney’s geometric subjects, creating a harmonious balance between non-representational interpretations and the inherent qualities of wood.
In her statement, Wenzel expresses her interest in how she perceives the world, emphasizing the importance of colors, patterns, and effects that spark her imagination. Meanwhile, Toney, in his statement, highlights the collaborative process with wood, viewing it as a main character rather than a mere surface. His paintings explore concepts of visual perspective, balance, and the art of observation, inviting viewers to question initial notions and embrace the complexities of perception.
“ENGRAINED” invites art enthusiasts to experience the convergence of these two distinct artistic voices, where the interplay of geometric abstraction, narrative painting, and the craftsmanship of woodwork converge to create a visually stunning and thought-provoking exhibition.
