Chris Hettler, director of athletics and boys varsity lacrosse coach at the Derryfield School, received the Walter A. Smith Award for Coaches at a luncheon banquet held at the Manchester Country Club in Bedford on February 2. The award is given to coaches in New Hampshire who have made positive contributions to interscholastic athletics, and is named after Walter A. Smith, who served as the NHIAA Executive Director from 1958 to 1984.

A graduate of Colgate University, Hettler has been at Derryfield for 20 years. In addition to his administrative and coaching responsibilities, he is also an 8th grade advisor and the college recruitment advisor. He played professional lacrosse with both the Boston Cannons and the Boston Rockhoppers, and is currently a coach of the Scottish men’s national lacrosse team. Hettler is also the coach and co-founder of the NH Tomahawks travel lacrosse club.
